Library 422Privacy notice and terms
In short
- Library 422 collects nothing about you. There are no accounts, no analytics, no cookies, no advertising and no third-party scripts or fonts.
- Your reading position, texts, downloaded data, highlights, notes and AI conversations are stored only on your own device.
- The only thing that can ever leave your device is the optional Ask AI feature, and only when you switch it on and connect your own Claude account. What it sends is listed below.
Who runs this
Library 422 is a free, non-commercial project. The code is published at github.com/JacobSlattery/library422. Questions, corrections, and requests about content or rights go through the project's issue tracker.
What we collect
Nothing. We do not run analytics, we do not set cookies, we do not ask you to sign in, and no page or app screen loads anything from a third party. There is no server of ours that receives what you read, search, highlight or write.
Hosting
library422.org and app.library422.org are static files served by Cloudflare. The downloadable Windows, Linux and Android builds and the data files are served by GitHub. Like any web server, these providers receive your IP address and the details of each request and process them under their own privacy policies for security and delivery. We see only Cloudflare's aggregate request counts, which identify nobody.
What stays on your device
The app stores the following in your browser's storage for app.library422.org, or inside the Android or desktop app:
- Settings and reading position: the texts you chose, the chapter you were on, display options.
- The Bible texts, lexicons and Library works you downloaded from the catalog.
- Your highlights, bookmarks and notes.
- If you turned on Ask AI: its settings, your saved conversations, and, if you connected Claude, your API key.
To remove any of it: use Remove in the catalog, Clear conversation history and Forget key in the AI settings, or clear the site's data in your browser; uninstalling the Android or desktop app removes everything. Nothing is backed up to any server by us.
Ask AI (beta)
Ask AI is off by default; nothing AI-related is downloaded or sent until you turn it on in Settings. It has two providers.
Claude, with your own account. If you paste an API key from your Anthropic account, the app sends requests directly from your device to Anthropic's API. For each question it sends your question, the passages it retrieved from the texts on your device and, for the double-check step, the draft answer, in up to four requests. Nothing else, and never your notes or reading history. Anthropic processes that data under its terms and privacy policy, which require you to be at least 18. Your key is stored only on your device and the Forget key button removes it.
On-device Gemma (Android). A model file you import yourself runs entirely on your phone; nothing leaves the device. The model file is Google's, provided under the Gemma Terms of Use, and it is not part of the app.
AI answers are generated text and can be wrong. Every answer carries its sources and a "Report this answer" link that opens an issue on GitHub with nothing pre-filled but a title.
Read aloud and sharing
Read aloud uses the speech engine of your browser or phone. Some engines synthesise speech on the maker's servers depending on your system settings; that is between you and your device's maker. Exporting notes or copying a link to a passage uses your device's share sheet or clipboard, and only when you tap it.
Children
Library 422 is not directed at children under 13 and collects no information from anyone. The Claude provider is subject to Anthropic's requirement that users be 18 or older.
Your rights
Because we hold no personal data about you, there is nothing for us to access, correct or delete on our side; everything is in your hands on your own device. If you have a question under the GDPR, the CCPA or any other privacy law, open an issue at the address above.
Terms of use
- Library 422 is free. The app's code is released under the MIT licence. The texts, lexicons and works it ships are public domain or Creative Commons; each is credited with its licence on the sources and licences page and in the app under Settings.
- Everything is provided as is, without warranty of any kind. The texts are historical editions and scans, the word tagging and lexicon links are machine-derived, and AI answers are generated; none of it is warranted to be accurate, complete or fit for any purpose. Check the passages.
- Library 422 is not affiliated with or endorsed by the publishers or maintainers of any of the texts or software it uses. Names of translations, editions and software are the trademarks of their owners and are used only to identify unchanged copies of their work.
- If you believe material in Library 422 infringes your rights, open an issue at the address above with the details and it will be acted on promptly.
